A Short History of Print 42

Early printers copied the look of handwritten manuscripts, down to their abbreviations and decorated capitals.

A careful compositor set each line by hand, reading the type backwards, since every letter was a mirror image of the printed one.

Each sheet was dampened before its impression so the paper would take the ink evenly, then hung to dry on lines strung across the shop.

How it works

From a raw PDF to a finished book in five steps.

  1. New Project

Add a title, author and language, then attach your PDF.

  2. Set Batches

Pick a page range and a batch size your AI model can handle.

  3. Run OCR

Transcribe pages with one model, or two side by side.

  4. Proofread

Fix flagged words against the scan and organize chapters.

  5. Export

Save the finished book as a Word file or EPUB.

Features

Everything you need to turn a scan into a book you can publish.

Dual-Model OCR

Run two AI models on the same page and see every word where they disagree.

Scan Overlay

Each flagged word is boxed on the original scan, so you can check it at a glance.

Any AI Model

Use Gemini, Claude or OpenAI with your own key, or run models locally with Ollama and LM Studio.

Batch Queue

Split long PDFs into batches that wait out rate limits on their own.

Glossary

Teach Texta how to spell a name once, and it sticks across the whole book.

Editor

Proofread beside the scan with formatting, chapters, page notes and review hints.

Book Export

Export to Word or EPUB 3 with a cover, chapters and print presets like KDP 6″×9″.

Private by Default

Projects stay on your computer, and API keys are kept in an encrypted vault.

Crash Recovery

Unsaved work is snapshotted as you go, so a crash never costs you a chapter.

Arabic & RTL

Texta handles right-to-left books as well as left-to-right ones, from the editor all the way to the exported file.

  • Right-to-left editing and proofreading
  • Arabic and Latin text on the same page
  • Amiri and Cairo fonts embedded in exports
  • Interface in English, Arabic and German

FAQ

Quick answers before you download.

Is Texta free?

Yes. Texta itself costs nothing. Local models through Ollama or LM Studio are free too. If you use Gemini, Claude or OpenAI, that provider bills you directly for your own API usage.

Which AI models can I use?

Google Gemini, Anthropic Claude and OpenAI with your own API key, or any local vision model through Ollama and LM Studio. You can run two at once to compare their output word by word.

Does it work offline?

Yes, with a local model through Ollama or LM Studio. Cloud models need an internet connection while pages are being transcribed.

Where are my files and keys stored?

On your computer. Projects save as .texta files and API keys are kept in an encrypted vault. There’s no account, and pages only leave your machine when you send them to a cloud model you picked.

What can I export?

A Word document (.docx) or an EPUB 3 e-book, with a cover, chapters, embedded Arabic fonts and print presets such as a KDP 6″×9″ paperback.

Why does my computer warn me when installing?

The installers aren’t code-signed yet, so your system asks you to confirm. On Windows, click More info, then Run anyway. On macOS, open System Settings → Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway.
